Today’s most gifted & eclectic band
Young The Giant has, over the prior 10 years, proven it is one of America’s most valuable national treasures! Their new album has multiple hits, including The Walk Home, Tonight and Guardian Angel. Their live performance is hard to describe. It moves from quiet, sad, heartbreaking songs to uptempo, backbeat-filled eclectics and right on to hard rocking pop tunes!
After having seen Young The Giant a number of times over the last years, I am amazed at the maturity these guys have developed, both personally and as musicians.
In there most recent North America tour in support of their new album, American Bollywood, we saw and band of musicians that have ‘grown up,’ found this … almost an international flavor … that yet stays within rock ‘n roll parameters! The odd thing though is that this, obviously serious and technical jazz band also absolutely crushes disco, funk, rock, complicated jazzy pieces (of course), and even a bit of rap and ‘60’s Joni Mitchell!
I have watched this band since The Jake’s, and what gets me is that as they have grown up, they have, literally, done it all right! They have, first and foremost, not only stayed connected with their fans, but have been seen multiple times mingling in the crowd, with their fans, talking about the show that starts in 45 minutes, while walking over to get a bite to eat! This not only ingratiates them to their base but also legitimatizes them as deeply authentic, especially when they continue the conversations with their audience while on stage!
As musicians, Young The Giant has matured as loving, loyal men. Not only has their musicianship tightened up ridiculously (this is an unattainable feat for jazz players as they’re already the most technical and “tight” musicians in the music industry!), but have also seemed to have found that elusive balance of guiding the audience into a frenzy, letting the settle and then doing it multiple more times … each a little higher, then saying ‘Good Night!’ Leaving fans in a nearly hysterical state for more! Perfect!
BUT, on Saturday night, at YouTube Theater in Los Angeles, fans saw an ever different side of the band; a gentle, almost garage set, where house lights were often raised so the band could interact directly with the audience, where also the singer’s (
Amazing concert, awesome venue, but obstructed view
Young the Giant was energetic and sounded amazing! The theater is so new and clean and has so many options of where to walk around, buy snacks and drinks, and just hang out. The parking was easy and safe. However, my daughter and I sat in our seats and had to look through the glass that blocks the stairs so people don’t fall. Literally, they were one of the only sets of seats like that. Also, her feet were dangling under the curved handrail. When I bought the tickets neither of these issues were mentioned. Someone from YouTube Theater or Ticketmaster should go sit in all the seats and the ones that have this blocked view should state that and be cheaper. If you are there to see one of your favorite bands, this is a bummer.
Always Growing and Refining
Have you seen Young the Giant all times now, it’s been an amazing experience to watch them grow, from a sophisticated, yet wild pop band to an even more sophisticated, jazzy, funk, disco band that can play a 60s tune like magic! Young the Giant is definitely a band to be reckoned with! Not only have they matured is musicians, but the overall maturity of the content of their songs just continues to reach deeper into the soul, revealing an incredibly deep respect for humanity and love to share their own vulnerability.
On the technical side, the lead vocals could have been brought out just a little bit more. And, having seen the show at YouTube Theater Los Angeles, we would’ve enjoyed seeing their parents just a little more! We love you guys and wait for every visit to any location that’s close enough for us to go see you!
Re the venue: all was excellent, staff seer upbeat and VERY HELPFULand COURTEOUS ( except LA Sheriff, who were all had kind of arrogant attitudes), and the food and drinks were aweful! Over $90 for one round of drinks … as much as a ticket! NOT COOL at all
